Lethargic. Always Thirsty. Urinating Frequently. Sound Like Your Pet?
Speaking of Senior health… did you know that it’s also Pet Diabetes Awareness Month? The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that around 1 in every 500 dogs and cats may be affected—a conservative number that is continuing to grow. While diabetes can occur in any pet, and genetics do play a role, it’s older dogs and cats have an increased risk of developing the disease.
Symptoms of diabetes can include:
- Lethargy
- Excessive thirst
- Frequent urination
- Increased hunger
- Weight loss
- Weakness
- Blindness
- Poor skin condition
While there’s no known cure for diabetes, it can be managed with insulin injections, diet modification and careful blood monitoring. However, this disease remains a serious, life-threatening condition.
