All About Allergies
The sneezing, wheezing, licking and chewing has begun—it’s allergy and asthma season!
Both allergies and asthma are a reaction to allergens. The main difference between them is the location in the body of the reaction. Allergies cause upper respiratory symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, skin rashes and irritation. Asthma is a more serious condition where the allergic reaction inflames the lungs, making breathing difficult.
Allergens that tend to set off a reaction include pollen, dust mites, fleas, smoke, and mold. Up to 10% of dogs suffer from environmental allergies, and cats are much more susceptible to asthma than dogs. Both conditions can make your pet miserable.
There are various medications that can help your pet with both conditions, your Crossroads Animal Hospital veterinarian can make suggestions for environmental changes as well as medications such as Cytopoint injections that may help. If you think your pet might be suffering from allergies or asthma, give us a call at (540) 832-1751.
